I am trying to get a 45 chrysler to run. everything looks good except when i put it on my batteries and try to start it, it drains my batteries within a couple rotations of the fly wheel. I have tried all my batteries so i know they are not bad. I dont have the wires for the outboard so what i did was connect jumpercables to the motor for the mean time. I checked connections and they seem to be connecting well. I did check the brushed in the starter and they look like they are well over 50%. Any suggestions would be great.

Re: drained battery

What did the starter commutator look like 87? Bright and shiney or did it have a dark black blue color to it? If the commutator is real dirty, your going to get a poor contact between the brushes and commutator. Starter will want to draw more amps.

It's hard to believe that an engine will drain a battery in just a couple rotations of the starter/flywheel.

Not real fond of the jumper process either. Are the jumpers getting warm or hot? Drawing that much in such a short time, I would think they would get very warm.

Re: drained battery

Wouldn't hurt. The film is probably carbon dust off the brushes. If there is a motor shop near, take the stator there and have them check it on a growler. This will see if the stator is any good or not.
