Drain Plug Releasing Alot of Water After Use

Hi guys I just recently bought an 18 ft Angler CC. I have heard many mixed reviews about the Anglers. But It is all I could afford at this point. So my concern is that i recently launched the boat for the first time and removed the drain plug before launching and put it back in right before we launched. The boat sat in the water for about 4 hours due to engine trouble (go figure). Upon getting the boat back on the trailer once we hit the parking lot we released the drain plug and it drained water for a good 3 minutes. I am very concerned about this due to the fact that we drained all water before launching. The same thing occurred when the boat sat in the boatyard for a couple days during rain. The only thing that i could think of is the boat is missing a cap on the two rear drain holes near the engine transom. The cap has a ball inside of it and one is there and the other is missing. Could this be allowing an excess amount of water into the hull? The previous owner said the boat is watertight which i am extremely skeptical about now. Any tips or a diagnosis would be greatly appreciated.

Hmm. that is a lot of water. How does the fiberglass under the boat look?

Pete, Thank you for the reply. The fiberglass looks decent at best it is very oxidized and does not have shine to it. I am new to boats btw so I am learning as I go. I appreciate the help. The bottom is freshly painted but has alot of excess old paint that seems to not have been scraped from the bottom of the boat. I have noticed two knicks in the front of the bottom of the hull as if someone slightly hit a rock or cement. The holes are very small and seem to not go deep into the boat. I was thinking that I should definitely try and seal them up some way as they could be part of my problem. Another thing that i have considered was the bilge is not working properly. Although even if the bilge was working i figured that having that much water is definitely not normal and signaling a red flag. I am very discouraged and hoping that I did not buy a complete wreck and am beat on the $2500.

Where are those drain holes in relation to the waterline? As you described them, or at least one of them, having the cap with the ball in them those would be scuppers I believe. Usually scuppers are at or below the waterline at rest, hence the need for the ball to keep water from coming in from wave action. As the boat moves and goes on plane the ball would then allow drainage as needed.

"Angler" implies this boat has live wells. Live wells have water intake and drain ports in the transom so make sure you know what the holes are for before you plug them. Those same ports have plumbing lines inside the boat. If those have broken or leaking they would allow water into the boat. Unless you had the bow high when you initially checked for water the water would not drain (it does run down hill). Is this an I/O or outboard powered boat? If an I/O there are lots of places for water to get in. Bad bellows (boots) are a prime suspect. Pictures and a little more information about what you actually have for plumbing on this boat would be helpful. Bilge pumps don't work unless switched on manually from the helm, or unless it has an automatic bilge pump float switch.

Hey the scuppers sit slightly above the waterline i plan on buying the missing one this upcoming weekend. The transom next to the scuppers was holding alot of water throughout the day I am hoping that this could help my problem. My boat is down in the atlantic highlands I will be able to get some pictures this saturday. I truly appreciate all of your help. In regards to the livewells the only compartments that seem to be able to hold water are the two small elevated ones on the stern. This water problem is literally driving me crazy.

Thats for sure! I guess things can only get better from here on out. The next worst case scenario would be the boat sinking lol.

Something to try is to fill the hull with water and see where it leaks/weeps out. Put some jack stands under your trail as water weighs a little bit and you might over come the max weight of the trailer springs. Put the hose in the bilge and turn the water on. Fill er to just below the floor and see what happens.
Make sure your drain plug has a good seal, and if in fact you do have live wells make sure the all the plumbing is tight.

TyeeMan, That sounds like a great idea I will definite try that this Saturday. Now if I do find leaks what is the best way to go about repairing them/sealing them.(if there is a way) The cheapest possible solution would definitely best suit me if it can be done on my own i would definite prefer that option.

Re: Drain Plug Releasing Alot of Water After Use

Hey guys just an update on my drain plug problem. I put teflon tape around the drain plug and this has completely solved my problem. Upon removing the drain plug after being in the water NO water came out of the drain plug hole. WHAT A RELIEF!!!
