Drain fuel tank?

Hi!

I carry my little outboard (merc 3.5) in my car trunk, on the side. I wonder if I need to drain my fuel tank before I put it in the trunk, and if yes how I do it?

Too, mercury user manual say

"With the outboard still in the water, close the fuel valve, and run the engine until it stops. This will empty the fuel from the carburetor. Close the fuel tank vent after the engine has stopped."

I'm not very good in english and I want to be sure before making an error: when I finish my day, I close the fuel valve while the engine is running, until it stall? Or I stop the engine, close the fuel valve and start it again until it die?

Thanks.

you close the fuel valve and run it until the engine dies (running the carburetor out of fuel). you then close the vent on the cap. this effectively seals the fuel tank

Hi vildric.

There may be a small amount of fuel in the carburetor after shutting the valve and allowing the motor to run until it stops. There could be a few drops. I would put a cloth under the top of the motor until you see if it drips a little. After putting the motor in the car a few times, you will know if it will drip or not.

Happy boating.

On my 3 HP Tanaka I just turn off the petcock/valve from the tank to the carb, close the fuel cap vent, tighten the fuel cap....good to go!.... The float bowl/chamber on this small motor might hold an ounce of fuel, so if it leaks out, no big deal.....
