Hello, this is probably a stupid question but....is it ok to drain the engine block after each use?? I have a valve on the front of the engine and I open it and drain the engine when I leave the lake. I usually leave the valve open until I get ready to use the boat again. Boat is used in fresh water only.

Thanks...Doug

Sounds like you have the Manual Single Point Drain system on your engine. The purpose is for draining the block to prevent freeze damage for those boaters that like to boat during freezing weather. While it doesn't hurt anything to drain the system when it's not freezing, it also doen't help anything to drain it each time.

Don't drain it each time. The cooling cavities in the block will rust much faster. You can see this effect on steel pier legs. The worst rusting occurs at the water's surface where oxygen will react quite vigorously with the damp metal. Everything above and below lasts many times longer. Even drained, dampness stays in the block for a very long time.

That is exactly why I was asking. I wondered if draining it would have an effect on internal corrosion. I also thought about the consequences of forgetting it open. If there is no benefit then I will definately leave it closed!

Thanks again for help!!!!!!!!!!

There is one benefit. You drain any sand and silt out of your engine. That way your block doesn't fill with dirt and overheat a cylinder.

That,.... Is Exactly Why I Don't Trust those Single-Point Draining Systems......

There's Absolutely No Way of telling if the Water is out of Both Sides of the Block, or Not.........

You Can't shove a Screw or Nothing into the Block to Knock that Crap Out of there......

I see Alot of Frozen Broken Blocks in the years to come......

Which is why I don't recommend to my customers to winterize their boat with that method. They need to take it to the professionals who know where to go to make sure every drop of water is out of the block.
Although as I stated before, If it is drained daily the chances of silt and sand builup is greatly reduced.
