I am intending to purchase electric downriggers for this summer salmon fishing on Lake Michigan. I like the Scotty 1116 model but notice that they are are not near as popular on Ebay as compared to Cannon. Is there a reason for this as far as the functinality of the Scotty?

Re: Downriggers

Maybe because nobody wants to sell their Scotty's.

Scotty's are very popular here in the NW, when one does go up for sale its sold pretty quick. I've been using Scotty electrics for several years and think they are a way better value for the money then the Cannons.

Re: Downriggers

I am also looking for a pair of downriggers and found out a few guys have surrendered their cannon's to mermaids of the deep and then replaced them with scotty's. Something about a design flaw in their mounting system which can cause them to break loose and fall off.

I've also found lot's more parts, accessories, etc. offered by cannon but just because they are more popular, doesn't necessarily make them better.

Scotty is manufactured on the West coast and therefore have a stronger prescence out there than here in the East. However, I have noticed some major distributers such as Cabela's now offering scotty.

I sometimes fish with my small children and also like the enclosed feature of the scotty cable reel which can keep fingers out of places where they shouldn't be. I think I'm going for the scotty.
