I was hoping someone might be able to help me with my downrigger issues. I have 4 electric Cannon downriggers, 2 std and 2 "short stop" type. Last year things seemed OK, but this year one of the shortstops will only go up, not down, and the other one doesn't move at all. I have checked with a test light and the one that doesn't move at all has juice to the breaker and back out but none to the switch. The other one I changed the switch since I was sure that was the issue - not!! There looks to be a potted "brain" type of thing in these downriggers. Can I remove that and wire them like the standard ones? Any help would be gratefully appreciated - 3 weeks to the fishing derby and two non working downriggers - AAARRRGGGHHH!!!
thanks
bill

Re: Downrigger problems

hi throbbin. sorry to say, im not familier with cannons [ i have walkers ] but it sounds like a switch problem possibly, or reverse polarity on your power cord. on the other unit that wont run at all, u may have a thermal problem, and if u do u cant take it out. i would contact any dealer who handles cannons, and im sure they can walk u thru it. hope this helps u some.....bob

Re: Downrigger problems

HI,
I had a pair of the cannons do a very similar thing. I removed the side(motor) cover, and found some of the connections to be corroded. After cleaning and reassemble, they both worked as new. There is not much room to work in there, good luck!
