downrigger noise

The cable on my Cannon downrigger hums. How can I stop this?

1. slow down
2. speed up
3. use a heavier weight
4. thread a rubber ball (tennis ball) on the cable so it rides between the water and the rigg'r arm.
5. enjoy it, as it's the speed that catches the most fish on Lake Ontario.

There is a downrigger cable made of spectra or dyneema (think braided fishing line) which will not audibly hum - to you. There is a good case to say that it still creates a noise in the water but it doesn't transfer the sound above the water like stainless 'rigger line does. But synthetic downrigger line also keeps one from using a black box device.
