just was given my first manual downriger .I tryed once I let my lure out to where I thought was good when I broughtit up it had backed up .I was just using a release clip .Am I suppose to use a rubber band on the line so it stays where I want it .No one has ever showed me how to set up thanks for any help

If I understand your question, it sounds like you might need a new release clip or need to squeeze the line more in the clip. The line should not move until the fish hits the bait / lure. It does take some trial and error to get the line placed the right distance inside the clip. Good hunting!

Recordhunter, I clip the release to the hoop on the cannonball. The fishing line then goes in the rubber pads of the release, and is lowered slowly (with reel drag loose) I troll for salmon, not sure what kind of wacky fish you're after! :D

thanks for your replys. I guess I have been using the wrong release clip .I was using a rooler troller to put my lure line through maybe that is why it backs up when I bring uo the cannon ball thanks

you can get these little metal collars you crimp on where you want the release clip to stay- esential if you are running two lines off the same downrigger
