Down trim needed?

Hi, I have a 96 65Hp Mariner and was wondering what the purpose for the power trim to drive the motor down when gravity and prop thrust did that just fine on my other outboards. I smashed the shaft housing when I just bumped a rock (honest)and the lower unit was ripped off.

The power trim is to adjust the trim of the motor for different conditions, out as well as in. Trim in to accelerate and get on plane and then out to maximize speed. Adjust trim for water conditions. too.

It gets Powered Down so you can move it at speed, if not powered the water would just hold it up and you would not be able to move it down at WOT.

Ross-Larter

I don't want to sound argumentative, I'm just trying to understand the power-down concept. You said that the water would hold up the motor at WOT, wouldn't the thrust from the prop do that? That's they way all other outboards that I've looked at work. This allows the motor to rise up if it encounters a large object. With power-down it just breaks the lower end off.

Thanks
