down rigger rod use?

My wife recently purchased 3 new "down rigger" rods from a garage sale, they are 8 1/2 ft long "Master" model #GC87 rods. I was wondering what these rods are normally used for and about the maximum pound line that should be used. They appear to have a very flexible tip and I am wondering if they will hold up to bank fishing for channel cats & flatheads. Any comments?

Re: down rigger rod use?

i dont recognise the model #, but check the info on the pole itself. it will say medium or heavy action. if they are downrigger rods, and at least a medium action, they will take 20 lb. test with no problem, that is what i use for king salmon that generally run 18 to 25 lbs. and they are good for much heavier fish. good luck.....bob

Re: down rigger rod use?

I use a shimano triton downrigger rod 8' for sturgen fishing. It is medium action 10-17lb line. I these are salmon/steelhead rods but are great for anyone wanting a good fight with big fish. because they are so skinny you can feel small hits much better than the heavy action poles that are recomended for fish over 50lbs.
