My Dad and I had been fishing all day at the Apalachicola river two years ago, and were tired of breaking poles and catching trees. We had a 14 foot aluminum Lowe Line boat with a small 20 hp outboard. When strapping the boat down one of the straps broke and I (luckily) tied a rope over the boat. We decided to take the scenic route back through Port St. Joe and enjoy the views. While crossing over the Inter-Coastal Waterway on a rather large brige, I could not believe how windy it had gotton? I mean it was like fighting a tank. I looked in my rear view mirror and at first it did not register, but at last I realized I was looking at the bottom of my boat. The front had come unhooked and I was flying a 14 foot aluminum kite.. If it was not for the strap and about 40 pounds of JB Weld (that is another good story), I would have lost that boat. I hit the brakes and the boat slammed back into place.

That would have sent me to the changing room real fast. Need to hear the JB Weld story sometime. Misery loves company.

Re: Double Take

Several years ago I had a slack attack when loading my canoe onto the roof racks. Stern rope up yo the rear bar over the top & tied down. Front - just an elastic strap to stop it moving. That was Ok until I had to hit the brakes to give way to another car. The canoe speared forward off the rack until it was stopped by the stern rope. It was hanging out forward of the front of the car & waving up & down on the front rack. The other car certainly got a message that "right of way" is something you are given, not what you have. Always tie everything down solidly now

Re: Double Take

I bought my kids a 8ft long Sabot sailing dinghy in 1993. We had a beaten up old Datsun 200B with a roof rack. I put two large oregon beams along each side of the rack and then put the Sabot on its cradle and rested the whole lot on the beams. I screwed the cradle to the beams and then tied it all down using ratchet straps to the roof rack. Off we went to the sailing club.
Half way there, there was a loud bang, and I looked in the rear view mirror to see a flying Sabot, still in its cradle, still attached to the very large beams. The whole lot landed behind the car... and skidded to a halt in the middle of the road on its two oregon skids.
The roof rack itself had broken at each foot near the gutters of the car. Apart from a busted roof rack, absolutely no damage was done, it was early and fortunately there was no traffic! I bought a trailer the following day!

Re: Double Take

I am glad to see I am not the only one. I saw on the news a couple of weeks ago where a large boat came unhooked, passed the driver and clobbered two vehicles in the other lane. Nobody was hurt, thank goodness. This happened on the main bridge in PC. It is so cold here that I wish I was in Australia..

Yea, its 5-15 degrees here also. The lakes are so flat they are better than half of the roads.

Gotta go, Driving out to the fish house tonight, the ice is 18-20" thick.

Oh, and the temp is in F. Come-on summer.

Re: Double Take

I guess I take it for granted sometimes. I went fishing yesterday and caught about 13 flounder. We froze, but we did not cut ice:) It was about 65 degrees. 18-20" thick.. That is absoultely insane. 25-30 in Australia??? I have got to research more. What do you catch in ice?

Re: Double Take

Mr downunder83 is referring to temperature in celcius (25-30 is about 80 - 90 degrees F using dunarunna's method of double the temp and add 30) and is being facetious about life being hard! :)

Re: Double Take

You can catch everything that swims in our lakes through the ice. Such as walleye, perch, crappie, bass, northern pike, sunfish ...

Re: Double Take

Let's not forget, bullheads, carp, dogfish, eelpout and the ever so common "cold".

If you want to try something different spearing (northen pike and white fish only in Mn) can be lots of fun and educational. Typically cut spear holes 2ft x 3ft with a chainsaw then place the darkhouse (no windows) over it. When the lake is clear enough to see bottom (8ft+) its like fishing in an aquarium. You can see the fish swim about, hide under the weeds and disappear into the darkness when a northern comes around. I have found this is the easiest way of "catch and release" ever. If a big one comes through you can marvel at its size and length and watch it slowly glide away out of view as it looks for its next meal. You'd be amazed at the speed a northern can strike your decoy (scares the bejezus out of you) when moments before there was nothing. But like everything else there are days you can stare down the hole for hours and see nothing.

Celsius to Fahrenheit conversion:

Temp C* x 9/5 + 32* = Temp F*

For example:

0* C x 9/5 + 32* = 32* F

30* C x 9/5 + 32* = 86* F

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEZY!
