Hi, in an earlier post about wiring a 33 hp solonoid and push button, Chris1956 mentioned a double pole double throw (DPDT) switch, I don't have the room to mount a switch and a push button because the kill switch is in the way, what I want to know is: can I hook up the double pole switch so when I flip switch in one direction, I push the kill switch and it acts as a starter button an tells the solonoid to crank starter, then after motor is running I flip switch the other way and the kill switch will act as kill switch and cut motor out. It seems like it should be possible I just need someone who knows electrical to draw me a simple diagram of how to wire.. Thanks Ronnie

I dont like the idea one little bit.

Why not just mount a starter button where you are intending to fit the DPDT switch. Or a spring to off toggle switch.

If you insist:

I absolutly do not insist, if it is a bad idea I won't do it. I'm full of bad ideas, just ask my wife. I appreciate the input. I dont want to do this the easiest way, and I don't want to do it the fanciest way I want to do it the right way , impacting the looks of the motor as little as possible, so Ill take a hard look at the space I have and re-think. Thank you, Ronnie

I don't like the idea either... At some point you will hit the button when you want to kill it and it's still in the start position (or has been hit there accidently) and the starter will scream at you... especially if higher than idle. I would get 2 switches... Plus if you ever lend your boat out you'll have to explain it every time and someone will still bugger it up...

Plus if you have kids around you will want a key switch... My kid loves plkaying in the boat at the dock and pushing all the buttons...

The kill switch on a magneto ignition two stroke engine must be OPEN to allow the engine to run and CLOSED to stop it (it shorts the magneto to ground).

Quagmire, Just mount another push button to energize the starter. You will then have a push to start and a push to stop. just make sure you hit the stop button when it is running, and not the start button.

The other alternative is to turn the stop button into a start button, and add the DPDT switch. To start the motor, flip the switch up and push the button. To stop the motor, flip the switch down.

Or one could just forget both switches and use an outboard key switch like God intended. You now have OFF-RUN-START and CHOKE (if the choke is electric).

Remembering of course that OFF on a switch is OPEN or RUN for a mageto system. ON on the switch is OFF for the magneto.
