Does anyone else have to click the "Back" button twice to go back? It only happens on iboats so it isn't my computer?

Just curious. More of an annoyance than a problem.

AK Chappy

Yep! Yep!

Also I had to re-enable cookies to keep from having to log in each time I returned to iboats.

Re: Double Click

Nope, no double clicking and no cookie re-enablinging and no retrying dialogue boxes.

In fact, I believe the pages are loading faster than before - but it may be my imagination.

Re: Double Click

I think they are loading a little faster too, but couldn't that be less traffic due to the "Doldrums"?

Re: Double Click

Dunno. BTW, I'm still on dialup, so when I say 'faster' I mean it's gone from a snails pace to worms pace. ;)

Now that is an interesting analogy/juxtaposition.
:D

Re: Double Click

It may have to do with the spyware iboats is putting on your computer if you enable cookies. I think the spyware uses cookie 2o7, or something like that.

Run adaware to check for spyware and see if it flags that cookie. Delete it and see if things pick up.

Re: Double Click

The double clicking of the back button is most likely due to the jerry-rigging I had to do to get the forums up and running again. Without going in to too many details of WHY it is the way it is, suffice it to say that the problem should iron itself out over the next couple of days.

With regards to spyware, there is none. For us to install any sort of software on our users computers without their knowledge is a) unethical and b) illegal. We don't do it. Cookies, which are and have always been a very basic part of the way web browsers work, are not used to "spy" on you, but rather to enable the forum software to "remember" you so you do not have to log in every time you want to post a new message. However, we do analysis of the flow of users through our website through entirely legitimate and harmless means. It is not used to identify a single person or any of their personal information. We simply use it to analyze trends and decide where and how to make systems upgardes to better serve our users.

Hope this clears up any confusion.

You are going to have to take that up with Adaware, and TrendMicro internet security. Both of them nail the iboats planted 2o7 cookie as SPYWARE, specifically, a data miner.

When they say it ain’t spyware, then you can come back here and say it ain’t spyware too, with some credibility.

You can read about your spyware here:

http://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/grayware/ve_graywareDetails.asp?GNAME=COOKIE_45

Re: Double Click

Quote From the Trendmicro link:

"Data Miners (Tracking Cookies) are cookies that are used by two or more Web sites to track a user's Web habits for the purpose of providing the user with ads or other material that the user might be interested in.

Similar to adware, data miners can collect a user's information for a third party recipient."

(emphasis mine)

Like I stated above, we do dating mining to analyze traffic flow. The "other material" is the improved user experience by deciding project directions based on user trends. We do not use the results of the traffic flow to advertise or sell to third parties. We do no collect personally identifiable information through the cookie. This is stated explicitly in our Privacy Policy. There is no hidden software installed on any of our users computers (as is required if you are to call something spyware). The fact that some other companies have used similar means for illegal and unethical purposes does not mean that we do. The fact that unscrupulous people have exploited data mining in spyware does not mean that we do and does not mean we install spyware.

As an individual who arguably has a higher degree of technical expertise in the area and an exact understanding of the inner workings of the forum software when I say there is no malicious spyware used by iboats, I mean exactly that. If we were to be installing spyware on your computer without your knowledge and using that to spy on you we would not only be breaking the law, but also be a bunch of liars since we state explicitly in our Privacy Policy that we do no such thing.

The point I am making is this: saying that iboats is using "spyware" is erroneous and false and I have explained why. However, if you continue to say we use spyware and incite mistrust amongst our forum users I will take it as a deliberate posting of libelous material, which is against our Rules and Policies and will be forced to take action. You can review them below if you wish.

iboats.com Privacy Policy:
http://www.iboats.com/opp.html

iboats.com Forum Rules and Policies:
http://forums.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=agree_review

Re: Double Click

The forums are faster. I wonder if the double click back thing has to do with the forums being located in a different place now. The URL isn't the same - it is being sent to a new location on iboats.

Oh, and cookies aren't spyware. Cookies are not even software at all. They are a just a numbers and letters - much of the time so that you don't have to login. A cookie on your computer can say, this is me so log me in automatically. Google, AOL, ebay...all use the same thing as iboats. Nothing new here.

Anyway, I like how fast it is :)

Re: Double Click

Landon - I’m thinking it's possible we are talking about two different things. For a comprehensive and contemporary understanding of the term “spyware” see this link. It will also help you to understand why your 2o7 cookie is getting nailed as spyware.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spyware

Am I to understand that the data collected by the 2o7 cookie is not shared with, passed on to, or accessible by any other party … except, of course, iboats?

If any data from the 2o7 cookie is conveyed in any manner to any party other than iboats, who is getting it, what are they getting, and why do they need it?

"Data Miners (Tracking Cookies) are cookies that are used by two or more Web sites to track a user's Web habits...
