I just put together my 360 mopar and volvo 270 out drive. Sitting on a trailer with it running if you turn the steering wheel (move the out drive side to side)the coupler makes a ratteling sound. It gets louder as you turn the steering wheel all the way to one side or the other.
This cant be normal. I just hate to take the f-ing thing apart again. I have delt with mercruiser when it comes to outdrives but this is my first time with a volvo. If a mercruiser coupler comes apart you know it but this one just makes noise. In this area there isnt many boaters out there that I could get a tow from.No test drive if I dont think I am comming back.
I know the question is coming. Yes I took great care in instaling the flywheel and coupler, all bolts are tight. It is a long story but the flywheel ended up costing about $800.00 and about six months to find. The whole motor has been gone over with a fine tooth comb as I put it together. Then gone over again just for that reason (dont want to do it again).
So lets here it!!! Break my damb heart. What has to be done?
P.S. The coupler came with the boats 318ci that I replaced with a 360 ci. Prior owner had no problems with it.The coupler sat for about 5 years till run for the first time 3 days ago.

Re: Dose a volvo coupler rattel?????

f-inscreenname.

I had exactly same problem on my fjord boat here in Denmark. Does it only rattle when you turn max to the left, or always ?. Did you remember to grease alle bearings on drive ( can be done from outside, and by disassemblying rubber cover at top of drive, outside. Mine only rattled at max steering to the left. I disassembled one year, the only error i found was the cardan link going a bit tough in outher position for some reason. Everything was fine, i ran the boat 6 years after till i sold it with no changes. But look at the cardan linck ( axcessable by removing drive )

Sorry forgot to mention:

Also remember to grease the places on drive, behind the motor. My boat sat for couple of years too before my time. I am pretty sure the noise comes from the linck behind the rubber cover at top of drive. Did you replace this rubber ? Should be done every other year. Has there ever been water inside. The linck is very pricey, but here you can get replacement bearings. Maybee i can help you. I am sorry to hear of your problems - this is volvo land - many used and aftermarked parts to get here !

It dose it left or right but not stright. Everything was greased once, the univesals under the rubber boot did not have any fittings. Going out tommrow to do one more inspection. How can I tell if it is the universals or the vibration damper. If I take the outdrive off I wont be able to turn it side to side. You need both peices to make the noise.

Re: Dose a volvo coupler rattel?????

Are you sure the noise wasnt there before you started working on it ? Some people dont pay attention to a little extra noise. The grease places at the link are in between the bearings, at the X ( sorry i am not so good at english ) for a grease gun. All lincks arnt greaseable, but most. I think all 270 are.

Did your link move freely in all positions ?

If the noise is only at turning, it can be a little play, either in the top bearing in drive, or collar ( whick means motor out ) However, as I vent on for 6 yrs ( noise only at max left turn ) i dont think this is an error that will through you off right away. These bearings are gigantic on a volvo.

Re: Dose a volvo coupler rattel?????

Had a similar thing with a duoprop sterndrive, got two new universals to put ib but the old ones where ok. The gimble bearing can make this noise as well. If it has been sitting form some time the grease may have hardened or some rust formed in the bearings or uni. If it is not too loud it may go away. There are some hidden grease points down behind the motor never found them myself and have sold boat since. Give some thought to having alook at the uni's eg replace and or gimble bearing the parts should not be too pricy <$100 aus and may save some serious damage if they go, good luck
Terry
ps raise and lower the leg from straight ahead this will also indicate if the problem is in this area, if you think about the setup two unis on a short shaft with a bearing on one end, as the leg goes away from central eg up/down left/right the unis have to work and a sideways force is placed on the gimble so if the unis are not free or the gimble is worn - noise etc. since all the power goes through this setup if it jams up some serious damage can be cause - be cautious.

Re: Dose a volvo coupler rattel?????

It is a rattel. I just put the boat together. Never herd it run befor. It dose not sound like something that should be happening. When I say rattel i mean it makes the same sound as a cheft using a wok with a metal spatula, tapping on it.I am going out now to try a couple of things. Be back later. Mark

Re: Dose a volvo coupler rattel?????

After careful listening I herd a slight knocking noise comming from the outdrive at the same time it made a the noise in the vibration damper. I pulled the outdrive and found that on of the uni-joints have a little of play in it. I hope that is it,if not out comes the motor.
