How do you keep door seals on your vehicle from freezing during the winter? Just curious...

Re: door seals freezing

Lived in WI all my life, never used anything on the door seals.
Only had them freeze a couple times when we got 1/4 or 1/2 inch of ice. Conditions have to be just right for this to happen.

Usually if its coming down as rain, most of it will run off before it freezes. Once it gets cold enough to come down as snow, your worries are over.

These old door seals are sticky even when it's not freezing. I've read not to use products like Armourall beacause the alcohol in them make the seals dry out?
I was wondering about vegetable oil?

We dont have a big problem with this here most of the time, but the best thing I have found is a very light coat of plain old vasaline. Put it on with your fingers and wipe as much of it off with a rag as you can. Dont forget those key holes.

Vaseline in the key holes?

No thanks, I put my keys in my pocket when not in use, don't need a greasy key to ruin a pair of pants.

I still don't see what the problem is.
Only a good solid layer of ice is gonna freeze the door shut, and then is not the little bit that will get on the seal, but the 1/4 inch that bridges the gap between the door and the body panel.

These old door seals are sticky even when it's not freezing. Especially the passenger door, it sticks like it's been glued! Maybe I should have titled the thread sticking door seals? :)

Maybe sub freezing temps will harden the "glue", and keep them from sticking. :)

Try cleaning them real good, experiment with cleaners on a small area, don't use anything that softens/disolves them like brake cleaner.

I would try rubbing alcohol first, to get them clean.
Then follow up with a silicone.

Is there really alcohol in Armorall?

Graghite lock lube. If they get water in them you may have to figure out a way to cover them up to keep it out.

Hmmmm, never had a lock freeze up either, and vehicles are outside most of the time.
Had them covered in a thick layer of ice, but once I got the hole uncovered, the key went right in.

Seen other people have frozen locks.
They also carried small cans of lock de-icer, - IN THEIR CARS !!!
Hard to use it when its locked inside.

I also don't lock the doors unless I go into a big city.
