preparing for a trip to KeyWest, i had new tires put on the trailer. crossing a bridge just past Ft Pierce, FL, i heard a grinding noise, before i could stop the tire came off. trailer carriage hit the pavement at 60mph, bolts on the axle carriage dug into the pavement, thus twisting the axle. luckily i travel in the slow lane, but when stopped in the emergency lane, the boat was still in the travel lane. Now, i have to drag the trailer off the bridge, in doing so the other tire blow out, now call FHP, and Wrecker. luckily the tire did not hit anyone and no one was hurt. wrecker charge $236, to pickup and store overnight and deliver to repair facility, $550 to the repair facility (Saturday) for total new under carraige, $100 for unplanned Motel stay, $100 in lost tires. in other words BreakOutAnotherThousand. CHECK YOU LUG BOLTS YOURSELF, your the one responsible. we had a great time in the Keys, and highly recommend it.

Sorry to here that TD. I would be looking for compensation from the tire store. No excuse for that kind of negligence....But good advice nevertheless....

Because of what happened to you, many tire stores tell you to come back in xx miles to have the lug nuts re-torqued. I've seen as little as 60 miles and as high as 100. Few people actually do, but it lets the tire store off the hook for incidents like this one. Lug nuts can loosen after wheel removal and installation. If the tire guy did not torque to spec it's their problem. If he did, it's going to be your problem.

I had the same problem this summer. I too was lucky the tire didn't hit anyone.

I now am religious about checking the lug nuts.

I had a whelel come of my camper while I was on the interstate. 24' travel trailer with the tandem axle. I didn't even feel it come off, the trailer didn't sway or anything. Luckly enough the hub didn't drop enough to drag the road, it was about 6 inches off the pavement when I saw it. You should've seen the look on my girlfriends face when I asked her if something was missing. I didn't know I lost the wheel until I got to the campground. Same kind of deal, just had new tires installed on the trailer and the lugs were not tightened at the shop. $150 later for a new wheel and tire, I check the lugs before and after each trip now. I never did find that tire and wheel, someone has a nice new tire with a tore up rim. I am glad nobody was hurt tashasdaddy.
