If the frame will hold it...
If the drive train will pull it...

...will the brakes stop it?

Sounds like a bad idea from the start.

Go with the HHR. It has the most grunt. For that short jaunt you aren't at freeway speeds and I suspect its got a lot better brakes than the Tercel. I drove those when they were new! I used to tow two snowmobiles with a '72 Vega Wagon. Plenty of power but stopping was interesting as you might expect.

Vader,Pleeease loose the cap lock. Using capitol letters on a forum is considered yelling. It also makes it hard to read. Although my wife thinks i'm def, I can read without any problem, welllllll, unless it's in capitol letters. :=

Thanks RP

Re: DON'T LAUGH OK GO AHEAD

The car will work fine, accelerating slowly and braking slowly. Depending on the ramp it may do a fine job pulling the rig out too. I had a 2600 # rig on my mazda mystere before checking and finding it was only rated for 1500 # (just anxious to get going I guess), performance was sluggish but acceptable and it even pulled out of a pretty steep ramp (that was impressive).

The real limitation will be brakes. That weight of rig is probably well over the braking capabilities of that car, even when the brakes are functioning perfectly with the best, stickiest after-market pads or shoes.

If you're interested in performance and the ability to do the job for many years, under cooperative conditions, you're interested in horsepower, tranny cooling, good tires, front or rear wheel drive.

If you're interested in overall safety and dealing with emergencies then braking power has to be a big priority. Most smaller vehicles are limited in their towing capacity because of the braking ability, which is strongly related to vehicle weight.

I don't know why, but I am suddenly reminded of an old Castrol motor oil commercial where a 28 foot monster boat was being towed on a dirt road thru the desert by...an AMC Gremlin. That still cracks me up.

Re: DON'T LAUGH OK GO AHEAD

Get a vehicle that has the capabilities that you need. You could lose everything (boat, trailer and vehicle beingseriously over capacity.

Puddle Jumper,
I thought the same thing at first.

Look closely at the 700O/B,,,, It should be 700 O/B

So it is only 1750, plus gas, plus gear, plus people in vehicle.
It will outdo the GVWR by a good bit.

Will the vehicle pull it, very possible.
Will the vehicle stop it in an emergency, probably not.
Will the vehicle pull it without safety issues, NO.
Will your insurance cover you for any incidents that result from it, probably not.

If you decide to pull it with your current vehicles, let us all know when you go.

That way we can stay clear of the area.

Re: DON'T LAUGH OK GO AHEAD

This is directly off the Chevy HHR website.

Maximum trailer weight ratings are calculated assuming a base vehicle, except for any option(s) necessary to achieve the rating, plus driver. The weight of other optional equipment, passengers and cargo will reduce the maximum trailer weight your vehicle can tow. See your Chevy dealer for additional details.
