My label on tilt/trim motor states ms grade sae 20w only. Can I find this or do I use something else. I just bought this boat it has been sitting in a barn for about 20 years. Not sure what previous owner had in it. Motor is a 1973 mercury 850 thunderbolt.

Before you add anything to the reservoir, check what is currently in there first. Don't mix oilt types.

Unscrew the fill plug and dip a screw driver into the reservoir and pull it out. If the oil is brown/black it's most likely engine oil. If it's reddish, its most likely transmission fluid. Either can be used, but don't mix the two.

Not a bad idea to drain the system of whatever old oil is in there and refresh with new.

I always used 5W-30 motor oil in my '77 Merc PTT. As Moody said. Dont mix motor oil with ATF. Any Dextron II ATF can be used if that is what is in there now.

I believe I'd be for draining whatever is in there, and use 20W oil. Hard to go wrong with manufacturer's recommendation ... ;)

I seem to rembere using a non- detergent, to. So it won't foam.

It is very difficult to find a non-detergent motor oil. Neither ATF nor detergent motor oil is appropriate for all systems. BN70 (BUNA rubber - aka nitrile - hardness 70) is the most common material used inside power trim. If the PSI goes much over 1200 then ATF and detergent motor oils can damage the seals.

I use ISO32 hydraulic oil in all systems except 1987-1992 Force. It can be mixed with ATF although it does not neutralize the damaging effects of ATF at higher pressures. It is engineered to maximize life of rubber, to absorb transient moisture, mitigate foaming, and withstand the shearing action of hydraulic pumps. However, some of the older Presolite systems will buck if the oil is too thin. If, after filling with hydraulic oil, the system bucks when lowering then drain s portion of fluid and thicken with 30w non detergent.

Most mercury and evinrude run great with maximized lifespan on straight ISO32 hydraulic oil. HO does have two drawbacks. 1) it costs more. Even in bulk a high grade HO can be $20 a gallon. 2) it is clear and difficult to tell fluid levels when filling.

In a pinch, hydraulic jack oil from auto parts store. It is a cheaper grade HO.

My '77 Merc 1500 PTT called for 5W-30 motor oil. In 1977, that was difficult to get, but now, not so much. That is what I recommend.
