Carpet diagram showed 750 sum sq ft needed, bill was for 900 sq ft of carpet and pad. The left over carpet and pad was put in one trash bag.

I questioned the amount before paying for it, and they said this is what the installer required, and if that much was not ordered they would not install. The drawing indicated 6 inches larger for each room, so standard stuff. Have bought many entire house carpet over the years, but never at a big box. WOn't do this again

Very strange. I have carpeted two homes from Home Depot and was very satisfied. Not sure I paid that much attention though to the overage.

Thought with mine they entered the numbers into a program so to make sure they didn't have too many seams. Mine had very large rooms so that probably helped a lot.

They did use a computer to draw it out, and where the seams would be. The computer drawing showed where the seams where, that's all good. Issue is the 25% more, including padding. There is no waste for padding and still paying 1.05 sq ft for 900 sq. Its not the money, its the blatant over charging.

Talk to the store manager and if they won't do something go to the regional manager. There is no reason to ever over estimate like that. I also always take a map of my house with measurements on the rooms to install carpet in.

We always estimate a 20% drop for steel, wood, etc. I have never heard of that much drop for carpet though. Seems something is way off there.

With rental properties I had a lot of carpeting done. After a few I started doing my own measuring. I would purchase the carpet before getting an installer (even did a few myself when I was younger). Good installers are everywhere around here.

And yes it looks like something is really wrong with those numbers.

This past summer we did a room. Their guy came to measure and came up with a number 25% higher than what I measured. When I called him on it and showed him where the seams should be he agreed. If I didn't know what I was doing some poor bloke would be paying 25% more for no reason other than them selling carpet you don't need.

I used to install carpet, decades ago now, and usually when you measure a room, you typically add 10%. And that covers any errors in that measurement. So you could measure your room(s) and see what it actually measured and go from there. As far as knowing the actual amount they brought to install, I can say... :noidea:

Similar story. I measured up our needs, paying attention to grain/lay. I took my measurements to the furniture store where the original job was done. Unfortunately the pro who did our original job was gone. One of his lackeys took over. Lots of scrap left. Too much. And the installers put seams smack where they were unnecessary, and didn't exist prior.

When I do hire out work, the contractor finds me to be a hovering PITA. Too bad. The guy that writes the check is the boss.

Original measurements was about 750 by their drawing showing extra for each room and where seems are. Cost to me was for 900 and when they got done there was next to nothing left.

To add, I did prior to paying talked to the manager at Lowes carpet Dept and asked why there was 25% more. He says unless we order the 900 the installers would not install. I'm in a hurry so just paid it. The rest of the comments are in the thread
