Don: Volvo trim sending unit?

after my marina redoing my helmut head again last fall (93 DP290, 5.0b), the trim gage worked, but was off from what I was used to. No biggy, just readjust my thinking, right? But after only a couple hours of use, the gage pinned itself in the up position.

Well spring is here, and I had them look at it, and they "believe" the sending unit is bad. I don't buy the coincidence myself, so I farted around with it a bit, and I got it to work, "somewhat". If I moved the sending unit 45 degrees to the right(port), the gage now showed down (which it was). But after bringing it up, the would pin again before the drive was barely off the ground.

MY question: can a sending unit go partially bad?
or did my marina not set it all up right when they reassembled it? which is what I think ;)

Also, there seems to be no way of removing the sending unit without removing the helmut head again. Is this correct, or do you do of any little tricks? Thanks :)

Yes they have partial problems, Yes they go bad all by them selves, yes tbey can be set wrong.
You can set the gear in the rack on the helmut and 1 tooth will get you a couple of degrees. Then you use the adjustment at the top of the steering shaft to get that last degree.
The racks and gears at the helmut also go bad. Have a look.

Re: Don: Volvo trim sending unit?

after removing the sending unit (it came out REAL EASY after only removing a small 1/4" of the transom with my dremal tool), it appeared it hadn't been lined up properly. I reassembled it according to specs, and everythings good again. It appeared the hold down clamp was on upside down, and perhaps the unit jumped a tooth or something like that. Thanks again for your help Don S.

well I finally got around to starting the boat for the first time today (drydock), and within seconds the trim gage pinned itself again, and became non-functional.

So Don S, would you say the sending unit is fryed, and I should try a new one.

No, I wouldn't say that. I would check the system and find out what is causing the problem.

K, I'll check it out some more, but I can get the sending unit to work, just not properly in the proper positions.

Re: Don: Volvo trim sending unit?

I checked it out some more this weekend. Can't seem to find any wiring problem. The sending unit just seems to react to power surges (turning key on and off for example) differently. It gage keeps reading differently everytime I use the key, or the trim itself. There is a default it keeps returning to sometimes, but never stays there constantly. I've ordered a new sending unit, and will see what happens then.
