I received my kit today and it looked pretty good...only one problem. It had an option for a top mount kit or lower mount kit, in relation to the motor. I chose the top because of space. It has mounts that bolt to the mounts on the head of the motor. The only problem is my lower bolt is 1/2 inch bolt and the rest are 3/8 inch so I have to retool the mount. Does this sound pretty typical? Also, my coil mount/holder is broken so I have to get a new one of those, any ideas as to where I could get one of those? Would a local autoparts have one that might fit? Thanks for any help!

Re-tooling the mount sounds peculiar...I've never expereinced this in any of the kits I've seen. Regarding the ignition coil bracket...a brand new one is $5.35, part number 65970T1. Any Merc dealer will have it, or a good after market auto shop should have a comparable one - bring the coil with you.

Re: Doing alternator conversion on Merc 170

I redrilled the holes that I needed to and found a coil bracket, THANKS!. Now after getting through a few weeks of just work and no play...now I can work on my boat! I want to know if there is anything that I need to watch out for or any tricks when I take the harmonic balancer off...I am being extremely cautious, so please forgive me, I don't want to cause me any problems later. I have tried but am just turning the crank.

Why do you want to take it off?
Also, if you don't have the proper pullers and INSTALLER, leave it alone. Even if you already had it off, if you were to hammer it back on, you would do damage to the crankshafts thrust bearing, and you don't want that.

In the instructions it says to take off the harmonic balancer and remove the OEM stator. If that is something that I don't need to do, I would prefer not to, because I don't want to loosen any of the magnets in the process either or mess up the bearing or anything else.

I may have spoke too soon. If the stator is good, you should remove it or you will have full amperage pumping out of the stator windings with no where to go, and not sure what the outcome of that would be.
It probably would be a good idea to remove the stator (just to prevent problems) you can probably rent a puller and installer from an automotive store.
If you are having problems getting the bolt loose, just remove the starter and hold a screwdrive in the gear to prevent the engine from turning.

Re: Doing alternator conversion on Merc 170

I have been reading through the manual and other forums and haven't found anybody who can tell me whether it is okay to leave it or not. If I do, when I disconnect the old wiring from the OEM stator, can I just wrap them with tape or heat shrink and leave them where they aren't going to touch any other metal or do I have to do something else with them?

Re: Doing alternator conversion on Merc 170

i just recieved an alt. conv. kit this weekend, and was wondering before i put the harmonic balancer back on, do the magnets need to be inside the balancer. When i took the balancer off and the stator off the magnets were on the stator, was just wondering do i need to put the magnets back on the h.balancer before i re-install the balancer?
any suggestions would help greatly
