Well... Went to hook my battey back up so I could winterize. Let my father do the connection while I filled a garbage can full of water to put motor in. ( only a '87 28hp Evinrude SPL). he put the positive on the negative terminal on the battery and then went to put the negative on the positive side. Once the connection was made I head sizzling from the head. Looked up after I bumped my head and saw smoke coming from the head. He immediately removed the connection once he saw the smoke and heard the sizzling.
As you can imagine this made me nervous. I made the right connection and she fired right up.

Do you think I will have any problems down the road/river?

Wkoch,

If your engine also has a battery charging capability, you surely cooked the rectifier. It only takes a second.

Like Djohns said...It only takes a second. Check to make sure the charging system is working. (If not replace the rectifier).

should have 12.5-14.5 volts across battery terminals when motor is running.
