Any tips on how to get rid of the smell? Already scrubbed him down with a baking soda and peroxide solution. Still stinks!

Give him a bath with tomato juice. I know it sounds strange but it works wonders. You do need quite a bit of tomato juice and make sure you get it all over him well, just like it was soapy lather. Then rinse him good and there should be a big difference in the smell.

Take him to a pet store and pay the standard $50 for a wash and clip. :)

I'd go with the tomato juice as well. My neighbors dog got sprayed a couple years back and it is the standard solution.

I don't think tying a box of baking powder around his neck to soak up nasty fridge odors is going to cut it this time :)

I have heard about the tomato juice but also heard it doesn't work? I don't care I'll try anything. Don't have any of that on hand at the moment though.

No pet groomers open right now, it's after 10pm here. That might be an option tomorrow though.

ugh..what a pain!

Here he is..freshly scrubbed...wondering why he's been locked out of the house!

Go to a corner store... they all have tomato juice. You need about three quarts. Don't let that poor dog spend the night like that.

Don't worry, he will be taken care of. We are currently debating what to do with him. Managed to move him to the laundry room using a piece of cheese as a motivator.

:)

If it's any help, the tomato juice really does work and it works pretty quickly. When I was a kid, our dogs would get sprayed pretty often. Mom would pour tomato juice all over them and work it in while the poor dog stood on the lawn. Then a quick hosing down and it would a lot better.

One time she decided to do it in the bathtub. That was a mistake. :D

Good thing I read this...I now have 4 large cans of tomato juice ready to scrub down the dog. I was going to use the bathtub..no?

I will take him to the front lawn instead.

Cheers

Well, bruceb you were too late! Myth or no myth the dogs has now been scrubbed down with 3 gallons of tomato juice. Followed by a thorough rinse with warm water.

He now smells like tomato juice..and less so a skunk. Maybe my nose is just getting used to it as said in the link. Though I can still smell it on my hands:(

Either way he has had a good wash, the first one was with the baking soda peroxide solution so we tried both methods. After that wash he is perfectly happy to stay in the laundry room with a blanket.

He had a rabies shot last week so we're not worried about that thank god.

ugh..what a night. damn skunks

The last time mine got skunked he came into the house through the doggy door and rolled on the carpet and the couch and this was when I was not home. I got an unwelcome surprise when I first opened the door. No bueno! Took a couple weeks before the house started getting back to normal.

Ouch! That's even worse. Luckily this all happend outside. We had just had him over at a neighbour's to visit their shepherd and to play in the field.

We were about to leave when he ran off into the bushes at the edge of their yard. Some barking, growling and hissing ensued then he came darting out coughing and sneezing. Rolled around in the grass and rubbed his face trying to get the skunk spray off..

Neighour's dog knew what it was right away and kept his distance..my pup however did not.

Ah well. He's only a little over a year old. Hopefully he has learned something.

Be glad it wasn't worse. My other dog got bitten by a rattlesnake last year. Fortunately, I was home and got him to the vet in time.

Really? You're lucky he made it. Small animals usually don't stand a chance with snake bites. We have some rattle snakes up here but usually only in remote areas.

Biggest threat locally is coyotes but they tend to keep their distance for the most part. Plus they tend to go after then smaller, easier prey and my dog out weighs them about 3:1. Have heard stories of them luring dogs into the woods where the pack was hiding waiting to ambush. Plenty of cats go missing around here:rolleyes:

When our dog got sprayed, we found a concoction online that consisited of the baking soda and peroxide as you discussed but also used Dawn dish detergent. The degergent helps break down the oilyness of the skunk spray. Its kinda like getting tar off your car bumper....you can wash and wash, but unless you use something that breaks down that stickyness/oilyness you won't get rid of the smell.

Go to drug store and try Douche, if you can try to get the one with Tricotine in it or any Douche will do.

The tomato juice bath didn't work when my German Shepherd got skunked. I'd go with the mythbusters combo.
