Doesn't make sense

We sometimes get an engine alarm - not necessarily at WOT but never at idle either.
The alarm will stop if you push in the ignition key (in other words choke the engine). Enriching the mixture just doesn't compute for either an overheating or oil injection problem.
1998 V6 carb 150 HP
Any ideas appreciated.

Which engine alarm are you getting, Rich? What does your Owner's Manual say it means?

No way to differentiate what the source of the alarm is.

Owners manual simply states that the alarm will sound for an overheating or oil starve condition.

Steady tone or beep ... beep ... beep ... ? That's what JB's asking. Your owner's manual will tell you the difference.

Had a similar problem on my '98 135. Intermittent beep-beep-beep -- no rhyme or reason to it, all oil system checks were OK. Diagnosed as a failed warning module. (200 bones.) Clymers shop manual had the diagnostics. Easy to do yourself with instructions. Make sure before laying out the cash... Steady beep is overheat. Pulsing beep is oil.

Answer is intermittent beeps.
Owners/service manual doesn't say anything about these beeps
OR
I can't find it if it is there somewhere !
