Does Tohatsu stamp engine model number and serial number on crankcase?

I am looking at buying a Tohatsu outboard and the seller is claiming that the engine is one size, but the tag on the lower engine cover seems to be for another size. It appears that these covers for the late 1990 through early 2000 2-stroke engines may be interchangeable. So I would like to be able to verify the engine size and hopefully the serial number somehow on the engine crankcase. Does anyone know if these numbers were applied to the crankcase and if so, where would they be located on 60 through 140 hp 2-stroke engines during the late 1990s or 2000s.
Thanks very much for any help!

Yes, some cowls interchange. I would expect the tag to be correct. It's easy to change a top cowl, but fairly involved to change the lower, as the powerhead would have to come off. Depending on your model, there may be a soft plug with the model and serial.

What model does he claim it to be, and what does the tag say?

Thanks pvanv!!!

I believe that both you and the cowl sticker are correct, as further investigation of the photo I took, and the manual I downloaded, revealed that it has more cylinders that the model he is claiming... :-D
I will look for stampings in the freeze plug also. (Thanks again!)

I would also like to get the history of this outboard. Is there a way to look up the service history from the information on the cowl? I seem to remember an old thread that eluded to service history.

Would also be nice to know if the engine came from a storm flooded area like La. or NJ.

You can call or email a question to Tohatsu America from their website, Tohatsu Outboards: Authorized North American Distributor for Tohatsu Outboards, Parts, & Accessories.
They may be able to locate some sales or warranty service records.

The Factory service manuals are copyrighted, so they are not available for free download. The aftermarket manuals tend to be too general to be of any real help.

Thanks Again pvanv!!!!!

I will call or write them this afternoon with the model and serial number.

Also, thanks to all who took the time to read my post to see if they could also help!
This forum is awesome! I only wish such good help had been around years ago, when many of us began our boating lifestyle. :)
