I've got a 1988 Maxum 17', 1988 85hp force that I just purchased a new michigan wheel prop for. My previous prop was a composite and had an open end and fit well enough for the prop nut and tab washer to be tight. This prop is closed at the end and no place for a tab washer? Whats the deal? So i put on the thrust washer first, then the prop (when I do this the thrust washer actually seats tight into the hub of the prop, but spins freely. Then I have just enough groove on the shaft to put on another washer with tabs that lock into the grooves on the outside, then a washer, then the nut. Does this look right? I was using a composite prop last year (my first boating season) so this is my first experience with an aluminum prop and I'd like to make sure I've got it right. I've attached photos of what i've got.
Thanks for all your help with this.

From my understanding, my motor, 1988 85 hp force is a single exhaust, non-thru hub exhaust. The exhaust comes out the exhaust snout below the prop.

Yes, everything is assembled correctly. Your engine is a single exhaust lower unit and exhaust exits only through the snout which is also adjustable to cancel torque steer.

Your engine can use either the closed hub prop you now have or the open hub thru-hub exhaust props.

If you can find a black plastic "flare washer" it can replace the spacer you have installed. SOMETIMES it helps prevent cavitation, and indeed, in the Chrysler parts books it is known as an anti-cavitation washer. I use them because I think they look good.

The problem with aftermarket is your never sure what it will fit.
It looks like the prop you bought is for the older Force/Chrysler motors. It needs the black flare washer.
What pitch is that anyway?J

I think that prop is supposed to be used with a nose cone as well......

This is what a thru-hub exhaust stainless Michigan prop looks like with the flare washer and tailcone (on a single exhaust lower unit). You can use the flare washer but can not use the tailcone because your engine does not have the three inch prop shaft extension.

The second photo shows a bronze racing two blade without the flare washer or tailcone. However, if you look closely you may be able to see the spacer like yours.

So, there is really no right or wrong and with or without the flare washer and tailcone performance is essentially the same.---As I said before, I think it just looks way better! especially when painted to match the hood trim. ---Yeah, Yeah! I know---Mr. Monk is my hero LOL
