Does one trim guage work for all?

I need to put a new trim guage on my '84, 6cyl 115 Mariner, so I bought a generic type on Ebay, new in the box. When I wire it up, the needle pegs out to the "up" side of guage. It does this whether I have the sender wire attached or not. Is this guage malfunctioning, or do I need a Merc/Mariner guage? Thanks for any help.

Typically with a merc/mariner sender, gauge pointer "full up" when power is applied even though engine/drive is not, indicates that the sender wire is broken/disconnected, or sender has no continuity. A wrong gauge would just read backwards. Check your sender with an ohm meter. Should have around 10 ohms resistance full up and around 167 ohms resistance full down. <br /> Good Luck and Good Boating.+
