Hi All

I am trying to restart a 50cc quad bike for my 10 year old. It has been dormant for 4 years. The carbs are full of 2 stroke oil. I used some 'start ya bastard', and she fires up real well. I took the carb off, checked the float, but it is full of old oil.

Main question- should I soak the carb in methylated spirits ( or other) or keep using the start ya bastard until it 'sucks' through the unwanted oil?

Any ideas?? I am a regular to the forum and I am posting in desperation- I know it's and outboard forum, but a 2 stroke is a 2 stroke is it not?

Any outboard ideas are welcomed........

Cheers

Trying to start it using ethyl ether simply will not clean the clogged oil. Neither will gasoline.

Disassemble the carb completely and soak it in carb cleaner. If you don't have carb cleaner, spray it well with WD40 or the light penetrating oil equivalent. Use some pipe cleaners to ream out large enough tubes. Normally you would not probe any orifices with wire, but some fine copper from stranded wire may be in order to clen the low speed orifices. It is most likely not any different than cleaning a Force carb.

G'Day.

I like 4 strand telephone wire for doing this...although I have skinned out some bread wrapper ties...be sure the float needle remains loose in it's seat and not stuck, otherwise you'll have to disassemble again.

I love this forum- I tried looking everywhere else before asking- thanks guys.

I hesitated taking the carb off- but it is what it is.

You can also get some carb spray cleaner that will surely help in the cleaning effort. Make sure to clean everything so that once you reassembly it, it will start and you can readjust the settings if need be... Make sure you use eye protection if you use any spray type cleaners. That carb cleaner is some bad stuff to get in to your eyes...

This section is called Non-boating technical topics.
I've posted questions about chainsaws....snow blowers (you'll have to look that up on the web, I doubt you've ever seen one....:)) amongst other things.

No worries mate. ;)

If you are taking the carb off and soaking it, I would highly recommend buying a rebuild kit and applying it to your carb. They are rather straight forward, and any rubber parts in that old carb most likely are junk because of our new blend of fuel. I would check the diaphragm if it has one. They can be torn/dissolved real easy but you will have peace of mind knowing you have a fresh carb on the machine.

Hi Guys

I took the carb off today, sprayed it with WD40, cleaned the bowl etc, and used some ' Start ya Bastard', and she runs- now I just need to do 2 things

1: Adjust the air/fuel mix and
2: Fix the small leak I just started by not taking notice how the fuel delivery line/fuel tap came apart, so I am fairly certain the fuel leak is because of Moi!!!

I'll keep you updated and post a link for a youtube clip;-)

Ether is hard on two-strokes....you might want to avoid the harshness of "Start-ya-bastard" and instead try the more gentle "c'mon baby, give it a go" .... (a shot of pre-mix in carb throat) :)

Yep I ruined just one 2 stroke using the "easy way out" stuff (quick start) usually if it wont fire, it's because it isn't adjusted right, back to the carb rebuild and then setting everything back to stock.

WD 40 has been a good starter fluid for us over the years.
