Does my trailer have an E-Brake?

I've got an EZ-Loader tandem axle trailer and the right front tire has been locking up quite a bit lately. 9 times out of 10 its when the boat is NOT on the trailer. Often it will happen after I come back to get the truck to pull the boat out of the water, when I park the empty trailer after I launch the boat, everything works just fine, and after the trailer sits empty all day and I come back to get the car/retrieve the boat, the wheel locks up. I've found that reversing a few feet and then pulling forward will often times free it up, although lately I've had to do it several times in order to make it work.

I was also sitting in horrendous traffic for several hours over Memorial Day Weekend and the same brakes overheated, although I wasn?t all that surprised with stop and go traffic for three hours going over a mountain pass. After we were out of this though, I towed the boat/trailer 300 miles round trip with no problem, other than the stuck brake when going back to the boat launch.

I've just installed new Bearing Buddies and greased them twice. Can anyone shed some light on what this could be?

It's just your regular brakes locking up. Sometimes salt or rust or dirt or whatever gets up in there and locks em up. Usually have to take the wheel off and go through with some brake cleaner at the least. Sometimes the brakes have to be replaced but not all the time.

You didn't mention whether these are electric brakes or surge brakes. That would help a bit in the diagnosis, although surge brakes normally like to lock in reverse, not release. Also, are you running a trailer brake controller?

Could be a faulty brake shoe, we had one peal off the backing on the highway and lock up one tire on our closed tandem trailer..a real treat to fix on the side of the road. Pull the wheel and do an inspection. It's the only way to be sure that everything is working properly. A surge brake wouldn't normally lock an empty trailer, I think they'd need a decent load to work right, and electric brakes will lock if not adjust properly for the load (this means you need to adjust it every time you drive away to compensate for the load).

You need to take off the drums and look inside. You may have been overzealous with the grease gun and pushed brease out the back seal. Grease over your brake shoes will make them very sticky(believe it or not).

Yes they are surge brakes.

I will pull the wheel and see what it looks like. I was a little confused as well, I would have thought the problem would happen in reverse but I'll give it a look!

Thanks!

if the shoes are sticking to the drum which is my theory, more likely to happen in forward.
