hey everyone got a question, i just bought a boat and it came with a 83 115 mercury inline 6, and its not pissing any water out the pisser, so i removed the foot and took the impeller out and it didn't look in that bad of shape it was a little cracked but nothing that would have stopped it from pumping water up, and i was wondering does my boat have a thermostat i was thinking that maybe it wasn't opening? the serial #6412988

Being the impellor is cracked it may have over time lost it,s agility and therefore it does not create a good seal. It may look fine but it may not be. Also check the impellor for a spun ring. (Lost it,s spring in the fins) take a piece of weed wacker line and send it into the Tell tale Sometimes bugs crawl up in there and die. Even if it has a thermostat there should be a bypass to let some water through the ports. Most bigger inline engines take time to fill up the passages with water before you see a stream. It will just after starting shoot a mist out of the two holes in the back of the midsection and then about 15 seconds later the TT stream will start flowing. Check the seals for the water tube both in the waterpump and up in the exhaust plate base. See if the water tube will hold in there without falling out. Check for blockage there with a flashlight while yor there. <Edit>Not seeing a thermostat for the engine. http://www.marineengine.com/parts/mercury_marine_parts/sn/06412988/ 1115623/683_120

Might get a service manual for your motor, since it's almost 30yrs old you'll likely want one anyway....

You can look thru the parts listed here....

yeah i need to get a manual, when i took the impeller out all the old gaskets just crumbled, so I'm going to order an impeller kit to replace everything and i was just gonna combine shipping costs and get a thermostat all at the same time, but i would have thought the thermostat would have been kinda obvious to see.

That motor does not have a thermostat. Mercury counts on the impeller to pump more water than the engine needs at that RPM. Change the impeller, stainless wear plate, and two gaskets.
