Does my motor charge the battery?

I have a 1982 model 25hp Merc. w/ electric start. How can I determine if it is equipped with a charger/alternator?<br /><br />THANKS!!!!<br /><br />------------------<br />Find the birds & you've found the fish!

does it have a belt running off the flywheel to an device on the opp of the starter?<br />If so that is your alt. If not look under the flywheel for a ring of coils, this is what is called a stator. When the flyweel rotates it has magnets in it that create an electric field on the stator. Which is what charges your bat.

You can also hook a voltmeter to the battery terminals. Should get 12 volts or better at rest, with engine running 13-14 volts. Most electric start motors have a charging system as far as I know.

Well... It doesn't have any belts so I'll try checking the voltage at the battery leads. DUH!! I never thought of that! <br />THANKS FOR THE HELP!!
