First off, I want to thank all of you for always answering my questions right away; this is a great resource for a newbie like me!

Second, I rebuilt my power head (1982 Evinrude 115HP VRO) put it back on top of the motor, connected all the wires, and when I put in the key and try the tilt, I hear the motor for the tilt whirling, but the motor does not tilt. Also, when I try to steer the motor, it does not move. Does the motor need to be running when I try either of these? I do notice some red oil dripping from the pistons that push the motor up. Is that bad?

Thanks!

MAX

You should be able to operate the tilt and the steering with the engine turned off, Max.

Hydraulic fluid leaking is a very bad sign.

Did they both operate well before you pulled the powerhead off?

This sounds like an engine trouble, but I will leave it here until we learn more.

Good luck. :)

Hi JB, yes, they both worked fine before I pulled the top end off. When you say engine trouble, what do you mean exactly?

Thanks!

MAX

sounds like the steering has seized over winter you can try to free it up with some lube but best to replace cable/system if cable is "frozen"
also it sounds like your trim pistons are leaking and motor would tilt due to lack of oil get a service manual or a mechanic

"Engine Trouble and Repair" is a category of fora we have to ask advice about problems, Max.

It does appear that you have problems, so I will move this to Johnson and Evinrude Troubles and Repair.

Good luck. :)
