Considering painting my Nautica RIB (hypalon) w/ a fresh coat of white. It's not horrible now but could use the spruce up. Any experience out there? If applied properly does it last / function / look good? Thanks for any advise!

Re: Does hypalon paint work well?

Can't say about the hypalon paint but I used a rubber roofing caulk, Black Jack or something like that - diluted with a little toluene to thin and dissolve the rubber pellets - to seal and fair some forward facing rubber strip edges beneath the transom and it's worked great. I looked at the white stuff but I needed black. It's probably not much different except for the pigment. I diluted it quite thin and added several coats. I didn't get much build, but it's held fast and kept the edges sealed. That or thinned Plasti-Dip also worked fine for patching some rub spots where the fabric layer was starting to show.

Bit late a reply, but you'll devalue it if you paint it and it'll look awful fairly quickly.

Re: Does hypalon paint work well?

I am a member of a dive rescue team in Oregon. We have a 1987 Hurricane 600 (21') RHIB. We just painted our tube with a hypalon type paint. In order for it to continue to look good and soften the tube to almost new condition, we used Tolulene to wipe the surface of the tube with another person applying the paint while the tolulene was still moist. This softens the hypalon just enough for the paint to go thru a chemical reaction with the thinner and blend. Once the initial coating has been applied and is dry a second or third coating can be applied for appearance. Our smaller 17' zodiac was done years ago and still looks new.
