Does Gasoline deteriorate Plastic?

Hi, I have had 2 fishfinders. The first one came with the boat and was probably from the 80's. I noticed that the plastic was really damaged (deteriorated). I thought it was from the age. Then one day, the transducer ripped off in the water because of this. I bought a brand new fishfinder and transducer. I installed it in the same place (directly below the bilge hole in the transom). This was about 3 months ago. Today, I noticed that the new plastic transducer mount was really deteriorated. Also, all of the paint was bubbled up and I realized gas was trickling down from the bilge hole due to a small leak in the engine.

Here is my question.

Does gasoline or gasoline/oil mix (I have a 2-stroke) deteriorate plastic? It looks like it does. But then I think: surely this can't be because we store gasoline in those red plastic containers.

Thanks for your help.
