Mercury has painted all of their outboards Phantom Black for almost 40 years. By the graphics on the cowling etc... I can come fairly close to identifying the year, but on color alone? Uh-uh.... <br /><br />Back in the 50's, Merc offered more color schemes than anyone. There's no way you decifer the year by color. During that era, Johnson would stay with a color scheme for a few years, then change..usually rather drastically (green to copper- copper to white). Evinrude's were predominately blue, but that was also subject to the year and model...especially going into the 60's...<br /><br />Clanton is right on with your engine's year & hp...but I'd be willing to bet it was the serial number that told him that info...not that the engine is blue!<br /><br />Walt
