Does carburettor cleaner actually do anything?

Hi all,

I have a stalling problem with my 55 HP env 79 two stroke when engine is warm and then put into gear from neutral. Given that I have never rebuilt a carb, I thought the first thing to do is to try spraying a can of carb cleaner into the carburettor. Also, can anybody tell me where I have to spray it without actually pulling carb apart? I believe there are 2 screws that I need to remove at the front of the carb that seem to attach a black piece of plastic to the carb. Then need to screw back screws all the way to end and then reverse screws 2 1/2 turns back? Correct or am I off ball?

Thanks.

Hi John
Yes squriting carb cleaner in your carb while it's on the engine or with engine running will really do something. It will really screw up your motor. Two stroke motors need oil, the oil is mixed with the gas. This oil gets into the engine via the carb (with the gas). When someone squirts solvent in there, it washes down all the oil. To properly clean your carb, you must first remove it from the engine then disassemble it. Then you can use the squirt stuff. (sometimes) I strongly suggest that you obtain a manual and do a little reading on this subject. These jobs arn,t real tuff to do, but you need to know what you doing. Always wear safety glasses when squirting that stuff. And have fun.

JohnM,

Save the carb. cleaner for the lawnmower. DO NOT use it on your outboard.

You need to rebuild, or have rebuilt, the carburetors.

That is the most common problem associated with stalling.

If you want to do it yourself, there are manuals availbale on this website (iboats).

I have learned from experience to not spray carb cleaner on a dirty carb. It will dissolve old gaskets and free up other crud and it will totally clog up everything.

Use it only when the card is dissasembled.

Ken

JohnM,

May I be the FIRST to say that perhaps using carb cleaner on your 2-stroke is a BAD idea.

Oh- never mind! It has already been eloquently elaborated upon.

As previously suggested, get a service manual. lots of good stuff in 'em. Remove & rebuild the carb. not very difficult when you have the correct info

Good Luck
Have FUN!
