Does braided line ruin guides?

Put some on my spinning rig this weekend and my buddy says it will wreck my guides. Don’t want to ruin my St. Croix. Is he right?

I've used it without problems on rods with ceramic guides (and I don't use expensive rods). One guy I know wore a groove in the tip of a rod with hard chromium guides. Don't remember which line. If your St. Croix has ceramic or a hard alloy I wouldn't worry about it.

Yup. What jtex said.

Gotta have ceramic guides for most of the braids. Coated braids are not as bad. The Power Pro that I use is coated and I believe there are other braids that are coated, too.

All lines will abrade guides at the point the lines touch the guides on retrieve or when catching a fish. If worried take a q-tip and check every guide by turining it around the guide. If nothing catches then it is still ok. If it shows parts of the q-tip then replace the guide. Not really hard and is a good off season project.

Rockchalk Ease your mind. I been using the same line as JB (Power Pro braid) for two years on a St Croix Premier. I use that rod a lot, at least two times a week, usually more. Pulled in some heavy fish with it. The guides are still good as new.

Hey JB ,,gotta love that Power Pro eh!

the only real way it will ruin the guides is if you use a mono leader and rip cast after cast the knot might knock a guide off. Had it happen to my loomis, a few years back. Second the power pro, best braid hands down!

Thanks guys. This is my fist time using braid. Interesting stuff to say the least. I swiched from mono mid day last time out just for kicks. WOW what a difference when bottom fishing. I think it will take some adjustment but I may be sold under the right conditions.

Did you back the spool with mono? Keeps the braid from slipping around the spool. And more cost effective.

Also, be careful if it tangles around your rod tip - braid is more likely to snap it off than mono.

ive been using braids for 3 or 4 years and no problems yet i also use power pro now verybgood advice about pre spooling with mono.the other good thing about power pro when it starts to fade you can pull it off and put it back on bacwards and you have fresh line again.
