What drive would you use with those new engines?

Well, that particular engine is over the 300 HP mark, so you would be stuck with a bravo, but I'm thinking of a diffierent variant of that engine that makes 295 HP and I would like to use it with my alpha.

The GM write-up mentions exhaust manifolds, but it doesn't say if they're wet or dry, or if there mercruiser or other.

Here's a question: Do alpha and bravo drives use the same manifolds and/or risers?

As far as I know, nobody makes a "Mercruiser compatable" marine exhaust system for that engine. Crusader does use the 6.0 base engine and it may be possible to adapt thier exhaust system for use on a Mercruiser, but they won't sell you the exhaust without a valid Crusader engine serial number.

Why would you want to go to an un-proven marine engine vs a 5.7L or 6.2L that would meet or exceed your hp and torque requirements?

It's not un proven, that's the link the GM marine engine right there...

Those are based on the LS-2, and use modern combustion chamber designs and have 6 bolt mains!

Not to mention variable valve timing. it is now 2008. the Chevy small block was designed in the 50's. In compairison to the LS-2, it is a cave-man engine.

That engine will last longer, burn less fuel, make more torque, make more HP and have a broader power band than any 5.7 (350 cid small block)

+1

The LS series of engines is HARDLY unproven As sad as I was to see the 350 go, I can't WAIT for the salvage yards to start filling up with this latest generation of engine!

They're here and they're cheap!

I'm refering to the 5.3 used in their trucks.

They can be had a wreckers or on ebay for 500-800 bucks with very low kms.

The VVT varients are a bit more pricy...

Fantastic v8 motors that bolt directly into boats.... except the exhaust....

They look really similar to big block manifolds.... I wonder how much work it would be to do up some adapter plates on my buddies c+c.... It would throw off the allignment of the Y pipe a bit... but that could be solved with custom couplers/elbow pipes

What I meant was, they have not been proven in the marine environment. Having a great reliability record in trucks is a good start, but there is always a few things they learn as it goes out in production and in the "real" marine world. I imagine there will have to be extensive testing of VVT to make sure under all conditions it will not be sucking water. Then there would be all the corrosion testing, etc.

I will say that hp curve is very impressive, while the torque curve is similiar to a 6.2L caveman engine. But, you indicated that you would be putting in only a 295hp version. Given that, I am not sure that the "new" technology is buying you allot, over the time proven dinosaur.

Given how strong these new series of V8's are, even though it wouldn't be putting out much more HP than say a really well built 350/383, I would have absolutly no problem cruising at 4000 rpms with this motor. If you cruise at high RPMS with an oldschool SBC, you will burn out your motor real fast.

And like I said, you can get a used motor for 500-800 bucks.... It would be perfect *IF* someone had manifolds for them.

Sweet! thanks man!

Any idea what drive they're using? Mercruiser by chance? or are they just straight inboard?
