To start off, if you can't tell already i'm a bit of a newbie. I did a search on here before posting this question but did not find an answer.
I have a 1976 Johnson 35hp short shaft, manual shift tiller steer, electric start motor. I had a problem with it popping out of gear at more than half throttle. Of course when I searched here I learned it was more than likely due to the clutch dog and/or the forward gear. I also had a spare lower unit from a 1979 35hp manual shift Evinrude with a bad prop shaft. I swapped the good forward gear and clutch dog from the 79' lower unit, into my 76'lower unit and all was fine, up until a couple of onths ago. Now of course the popping out of gear is back and I am again looking for another set of gears.
My question is does anyone know if the newer mid 80's lower units will swap with my motor? I imagine the drive shaft will have to be swapped as well. But I noticed sometime in the 80's Johnson/Evinrude found the flaw in their two eared clutch dogs and went to a 3 ear system. I think this would be a better way to go as there is more surface engaging the gears instead of just the 2 ears on mine. Thus it should last a bit longer using the correct shifting techniques. Any help is welcome and sorry for being long winded. Thanks!
