This little box that is under my dash (Glastron) and it has three wires. Purple brown and black. It looks like it connects somewhere under the dash.

can anyone tell me what it is? I am doing a rewire son and I want to make sure I know what this thing is.

Re: Does anyone know what this is?

Your unknown three terminal device appears to have a heat dissipating cooler. Based on this we can expect it to be consuming electrical energy and converting it to heat.

The wires attached have colors which are associated with standard functions in a small boat electrical system as follows:

VIOLET = usually a switched battery positive
BLACK = usually a battery negative
BROWN = usually associated with a pump control circuit

We can assume the VIOLET conductor provides power to the device. The BLACK conductor is a voltage reference and circuit return. The BROWN would therefore tend to be an output from the device.

Since you have complete access to the boat, you should follow the wiring to discover what other circuit elements are connected to this device.

Well I can't tell you for certain what that is used for, if I were to venture a GUESS it could be a relay switch.

Maybe used to switch a float controled bilge pump over to direct power when you turn the ignition off. Or to turn some other electrical device on or off based upon your ignition or main power control.

Just a guess though; my suggestion would be to follow advice posted above and trace the wires back to their source.

HTH and good luck:)

Not knowing anything about the boat, I think it's a power regulator.
