Does anyone know anything about boats and radio?

I am looking at possibly broadcasting a radio station from a boat on a huge trip from the USA to Europe. Does anyone know what countries allow boats to broadcast from a boat? Is it illegal? It would be music only specifically from the band, Phish. I will obviously need someone on the trip that knows a lot about boats, because I know very very little about them.

I'm researching "Radio Caroline" a bit as we speak.

I'd be interested to hear more about your plans here.... Who's gonna be listening to Phish in the middle of the Atlantic?

There is a huge community of online support for the jam band community. We wouldn't be playing only Phish though! If it is the trip that I am hoping for, we would have to have quite the playlist. I basically want to base the music on whatever mood, energy, crazyness, or emotions the crew would be going through at the time.
My main question is could I pull this off legally? Or would I have to go "pirate radio" style?

Are you talking about taking a cruise ship, or is this a private boat, or boats?

If you're just dealing with broadcasting for the ship, you'll only need a couple watts of power, and once you're beyond territorial waters, it won't matter.
As for legality of it, you'll need to know whos waters you'll be in, and what their laws are about it. Can't really answer that one.

I've considered setting up a pirate station.
Check this out for a ton of info, if you haven't already.

The key to getting away with pirate radio, is not pissing anyone off. meaning: Keep it 'G' rated for whoever stumbles across it, and don't step on anyone elses toes on air (make sure you're using a dead spot on the dial).

Link has more.

In the middle of the Atlantic, I don't see a problem. The stupid question is, as you near land, i.e. England, Portugal, Scandanvia (depending on your route), why don't you ask them? Those countries are the ones you have to worry about, not over here...

this is, without a doubt, the oddest post yet. A trans-Atlantic boat trip brings to mind a lot of things on the list above "music broadcast."
