I recently bought a used boat with a 70 HP Tohatsu engine (1987 I think). I intended to junk the engine but it runs OK, looks really rugged and well made. Nobody around here sells them. Does anyone out there have experience - good or bad - with Tohatsu engines ?

Re: Does anyone have a Tohatsu ?

i have a tohatsu 90 hp, 2000 on a 17' Mako. Runs good, starts good. It is gaining a reputation here in Maine as a working boat motor. There is nothing fancy about the mechanics of it, seems to borrow a little from other brands. Overall an easy motor to work on for the do it yourselfer, but Finding parts and service for Tohatsu can be a problem, compared to Mercs, etc. There is virtually no source for parts on the internet. Mastertech is about the only place that says they can get service manual. Two marinas around me are listed by Tohatsu as authorized service centers, but when I asked them, they said they are phasing out service for these motors, but could order parts.

My father runs a new susuki twenty five horse,it was purchased out of state. The dealer checked and we do have a dealer the sells your brand of motor. We have been told that they are the same basic motors. Now if that rule dates back to your motor I do not know.

Re: Does anyone have a Tohatsu ?

I had a 40 hp that worked great for me and a previous owner, I sold it (and the boat it was on) two years ago & still see it on the river. Only problem I had with it was that the power trim unit blew a hole in its housing, and replacement would have involved major $ as it was integated with the transom mount, etc. Solved that problem with an aftermarket T&T unit for about $300 from Cook Mfg.
