Hello group,

I am curious if any of you fish local Pro-am or just Ametuer tournaments. I am combining the two passions in my life and am going to fish 2 fundraising tournaments in the spring. I have no idea what to expect. Have any of you fished any benefit tournaments? What kind of formats have you fished what do you like and what dont you like. I am looking into trying to get another fundraising tournament in may of next year and would like some advice.

Thanks

Matt

I fish an all ladies offshore tournament in Matagorda, Texas called the Mermaid Tournament. It benefits the Women's Crisis Center in the area. The pot is usually around $60,000. We usually have about 30 boats. The cost is $300 to enter then additional $$$$$$ to 'buy your boat". If you don't buy your boat you'll only receive 50% of the prize money. Two nights before tournament day, we have a Clacutta. Thats when the bidding war begins. People can bid on any boat they want and some boats go for as much as $3,000. If you buy someone elses boat and they come in first you win a portion of the prize money. If the boatowner that wins first "buys his own boat" its an additional $150 on top of the $300. But he recevies only 50% of the winnings if he dosen't outbid everyone at the Calcutta.

We fish for King, Ling and Dolphin. You must catch one in each category in order to win, then its based on weight. Last time I fished it, I had a 58 pound ling, a 46 pound king and never could get even so much as a chicken dolphin. My two fish outweighed all the others, but not having all three kept me out of first place. :(

Tournaments are great fun, but it is expensive.

The tournaments we will fish in the spring are $100 per boat or at least were last year, we didn't fish them last year, didn't have a boat that was safe for the lake of the size. The idea behind these tournaments is not to make money but rather raise money for charity. My son has Muscular dystrophy and we will be raising money for MDA. I am just not sure what to expect as far as format and if I want to help put one on with their help, I would like to know what formats are liked, whats not liked and so forth. Obviously its nice if you have more boats therefore more payout and more raised. Anyway thanks for the input and anymore is welcome.

Matt
