I recieved this boat for free when my grandmother passed away and it was not the original motor for the boat. It runs great but I want to add a fish finder but dont want to drain the battery. Does this motor have a charging system? If so, where can I find a diagram so I can route power back to my battery? Thanks

Welcome to iboats.

Rope start wont have a stator, electric start will.

If it's an electric start then it has a charging system. Perform the normal charging system tests to make sure it is functioning correctly. I believe its part of the Secret File at the top of this forum. Good luck with it.

The electric start model should be equipped with stator coil and rectifier for battery charging.

Measure your battery volts and then start the engine. You should see battery volts rise as the engine recharges it.

If you do not see an increase .. check that the rectifier is fitted. If it is, also check the volts at the red lead. It should read the same as battery and rise once the engine is running.

If no joy then you can test the rectifier according to Joe Reeves' instructions on the "Engine Frequently Asked Questions" board. ( but if you use a digital multimeter use it on the "Diode test" setting as they often do not work on the ohms ranges for diode testing.

Your original question already said that you have a J40ELCE, which is a 1989 with electric start. So, yes it has an alternator. You don't have to "route power back to your battery", because it is already recharging the battery any time it is running. If you have any reason to doubt it is working, you can do a voltage check as described. Do you have a reason?

Ive checked the battery after started which read the same as before started. Will do some more digging around today. I used it all weekend and the battery still has 12.6v with many starts. That's what I needed to know. Thanks
