pretty sure it does. is it the 3 cylinder? look at the top of the cylinder head, just above the top plug. you should see the housing bulging out right there .

as for where to get one? any merc dealer.

Probably does. Only mariners I know of that were of the old design (4 cyl) was the 40-50. Any 3 cyl should have one and it's on the rear of the water jacket, obvious to see it as it appears as something "added on" to the back top of the water jacket which is the plate with the spark plug holes that covers the entire rear of the block.

First of all you have to have a place to put it. Since it is 3/8 in in dia (give or take) and and inch and a half long, and has to be in the water, there aren't many places it can go if you have one.........still puzzling that you wouldn't; but if the rest of Mercs didn't have them back then (my '89 115 tower didn't) maybe Merc decided to not use them on any? Dunno!

Anyway where to put it? About the only place that gives you that kind of room is to slide it down along side a cylinder and since the top of the engine is the hardest to keep cool, slid down adjacent to the top cylinder is where it would probably be.

Additionally, a separate cover for it would be prudent rather than having to remove the whole water jacket cover to change it out, so they mount it on top of the water jacket cover, near cylinider #1 under a separate cover. If it ain't there you must not have one......that's where mine is on my '02, 90 hp.

Sorry for any disinformation; just trying to be helpful.

Yup, that motor does not have a poppet valve or thermostat. On the contrary, the 3 cyl 70/90 of the same era do. I'm not sure why Merc chose not to have them on the 50/60 hp models.

My thermostat was marked to open at 120F. Wouldn't think your water would be/should be hot without one, course I don't know your operational circumstances.

My 86/87 Mariner 60 hp 3 cylinder has the thermostat and associated poppet valve located under the side cover.
