i have a 16 foot lund with late 80s 35 merc.. it dont want to plane out too bad and was wondering if anyone had tried those doel fins or sting rays and if they help much.. thanx
Hey Wally
I put a hydrofoil (don't remember the brand)on mine last year to try to correct the same problem. We had to put an adult on the front fishing deck to plane out, put the fins on and the boat pulled my 220 lb arse up on skis with no problem. They worked good on my boat.
Good Luck
I put a Stingray foil on my Volvo a couple months ago. It really does help stabilize the boat and lower the speed at which you plane. Once I get it up, I can cruise on plane at 15mph GPS indicated, which is nice pulling tubes around at slow speeds. However, they do lower top end by about 5mph and the fins are quite sharp (ouch!).
Hi, Wally.

I use a SE Sport 300 hydrofoil on my 17'.

It planes much quicker and at lower speed.

There has been no loss of top end.

Good idea.

Good luck.
I had similar results as JB posted after I installed an Attwood hydrofoil on the old 150 Evinrude on my 18.5' Alumacraft walleye boat. Quicker to plane, then stays on plane at lower speeds. Seems to handle better too - not that it was bad to begin with, but the thing kind of feels like it's on rails or something now. No loss of top speed either.
Wally, I installed a Stingray on my 16'4" Baja w/110 hp OMC and it improved the ride in every way. The bow used to rise way up and stay up until the boat planed at 25mph or so and would fall off plane anytime I slowed down even briefly. No more, she pops out of the water quick and level and in about 2 seconds now even with the motor trimmed up a tad (helps in "stop and go" traffic). I can stay on plane at about 15 mph or less also. I lost no top end. I believe the stingray is the largest foil and the doelfins are the smallest with everything else falling in between?
