First the stats: 2003 Dodge Durango 5.9L 4wd 46RE trans 77k miles.

I don't know when the last trans fluid/filter change was done, on the list to get done this month. When first getting going in the morning the vehicle will shudder and the trans will not shift into higher gears without reving to high rpm's then letting off accelerator. This just started a couple days ago the only other oddity that I've noticed was the fact that it stopped once I switched the overdrive off.
Any ideas or thoughts are appreciated.

OD solonoid faulty , shift solonoid, blockage in fuild passage, torque convertor, low on fuild, pump pressure low or failing and on and on Change your fuild first, until then stay out of OD but beware it will heat up more if at high speeds, just around town under 42 mph ok

Mine has similar problems, When cold it wont shift past 3rd gear...Normally have to drive afew miles before she finally shifts, after that its good to go. I dont know how long its been doing it as I have a 4 mile trek through town (stop n go) before I get on the expressway.I noticed it when I was working out of town and living right next to the expressway where I hopped right on...
Its going into the shop this week,I will keep you posted.

Dodges and their trannys......

Tech on the phone seems to think it could be a bad seal inside.

We dont know about either of these transmisions as to service, but the norm is not to do any maintenance untill the transmision starts something strange. Then blame the manufacture. First service on an auto trans should be around the 25,000-35,000 mile range depending on service life, towing etc. Never more than 50,000.

Re: Dodge trans issues

Just got the vehicle back in late Dec. Working my way through the routine maintenance to get it all up to date. Has Dodge had trans problems , yes. Does that make them bad? Maybe, but find me a manufacturer that doesn't haven't their only problem areas. ;) My personal preference for trans fluid and filter change is right around 30K because of the towing and city driving I do.

In any event thanks guys. I've seen the od solenoid mentioned elsewhere and from what I've seen you have to take the pan off to get to it, so I'll probably have that changed while the fluid and filter are being done anyways, even if that isn't the cause I'll feel safer knowing that a potentional problem has been taken care of.

Need to get a Ford L'D. :p My old E150 went to 149K b4 I changed the fluid and then it was only a backflush. It was still as pink as a baby's ????. I now have 203K on it and it still shifts like it did off the showroom floor.

I am always way overloaded but I never push it up the grades. Probably also why it still only burns a qt of 0w-30 A**oil in 5-6000 miles.

Now in contrast, my son's pontiac sunbird (GM) only has 114k on it and it is one horrible pile of_____! You fill in the blank.
