I have a 1988, 21' Runabout that has " docking Lights" They are those " Eyeball" ones Mounted into the hull. I always thought they were Kinda Like headlights and used to keep them on for Hours...well I learned they Burn out rather quickly, and they are only supposed to be used for " docking" ( hence docking lights right ? )

These Lights are Expensive to replace ( $89.99 Each ) and they can be left on accidently all the time .... Then they Burn out !

So my question is to the group: Has anyone come up with WHY they burn out ? and any why to Lengthen their life ? Is there replacements which last Longer ? and their anyone who have creatively addapted anything in their place ?

My Ideas are taking an automotive Key Buzzer and attaching it to the Light switch at least I will know when the switch is on. I also would like to use a Timer Circuit however I cant seem to locate a Timer that would last like 3 Minutes and the shut off thats 12volts.

So any Ideas on this one ?

[colour=blue]They burn out because of vibration and heat. Like a car, they should last a reasonable amount of time. You may have a voltage problem or just maybe a pair of faulty lights.

Replacing the switch with one that has an LED indicator will fix the 'left on' problem.

Replaced mine with the same diameter driving/fog lamps and wired in a helm lamp for indicator.

John, Those light cost too much for the same reason that a Jewish Divorce costs so much: "It's worth it"

Seriously, If they are hologen they can have a short life span. My car's headlamps only last six months or so.
