Searched but didn't really find a answer so hopefully find one here.
We are searching for a new place to wet dock our 24 ft pontoon. Is there a rule of thumb or anything on how big a dock is needed for boat sizes ?
Thanks
Makr

I do not have enough info to give a good answer. Are you talking about a marina slip, with a dock across the transom and a pole on each side of the gunwale, or do you want to tie the gunwale to the dock?

If you are looking for a slip at a marina; they will tell you what size they will allow you to occupy. It will be something slightly larger than 24 feet.
If you are looking to build your own dock; You'll need 24 feet, plus enough more to reach deep water if needed.

You can often get away with the dock being 2/3 - 3/4 the length of the boat but ideal is to have the slip as long as or longer than the boat.

The more boat sticking out past the dock the harder it is to tie securely and the more your boat is exposed to damage from other boats.

Sometimes access such as for loading/unloading becomes more difficult.

Being a pontoon you may have it easier than those of us with pointy boats.... Look at your cleat and boarding locations and decide for yourself how long you need it to be to properly tie off and to access the boat.

That said since you are obviously new to marina use you may be looking at the price per foot and trying to decide... If so you need to understand that that is price per foot of your boat measured over all (not what it says on paper) IE my 28'er is 33' overall so I would pay $X per foot times 33'

Most likely the marina would put me in a 40' slip but my price would only be for 33'

Exception, often a slip will have a min length IE you have an 8' boat in a 50' slip they likely wouldn't go for that, instead they might charge you for 40'

No this dock is at a persons house. We had it a Marina previously but they are having county issues so he had to tear down his docks. So goes the story and most of them are gone now. Any ways this dock is what you normally find for residential or at least around here. Its not long, no poles. Attached to the seawall. I assume no more than 12 feet long.

Ayuh,..... I moor my 34' houseboat in front of my house, 20' off the concrete dock, parallel,...

I sank heavy ground tackle out, 'bout 20' beyond the boat, 'n tie-off to 'em,... forward starboard is the prevailin' wind,.....

I cable off a 7' x 16' floatin' dock to walk from the concrete to the houseboat,....

You may have to moor off the end of that little dock,.... depends on the location, 'n conditions,....
