im wondering if anyone else has ever tried this on their baitcasting reels. i have found that really no matter what line ive tried, i will birdnest or even my line has broke off on the spool. well when that happens now your left with a half spool. so what ive done in the past is i would put electrical tape on a third of my spool. then if i do bird nest or line breaks i have not wasted as much line. ive tried stren, berkley, and others. have not tried the floricarbons yet. but you guys have to know what i mean, your not going to cast that far anyway. the only time i need alot of line is when im striper fisher and they run a good 60 to 80 yards out. im wondering if they make some kind of band to wrap around the spool. i dont know maybe im the only one.

Re: do you go through alot of line

1. I put about 100yd (or 50% of spool) of good quality mono on the spool before I start the Power Pro.

2. I replace the last 50-75 yd of Power Pro every season.

3. Two benefits of getting really old are: you don't try to cast into the next county or into a stiff wind, and if you do backlash it you sit down and take your time to unweave the mess rather than cutting up line that costs like gold.

YEP. I'm 65 and every time someone gets a bowl of spaghetti off their reel, I've gotten so I can sort it out in 10 minutes to their hour and a half. Old timers patience outdoes youthfull exuberance every time. Now if I can just figure out a flat rate for untangling-----.:D

If you keep sorting it out for them, they will never learn!:D I used to get lots of backlashes, but then I was casting for distance. I seldom get one anymore, use a decent reel and take the few seconds to adjust it everytime you change to a different weight lure. I use back up line on the spool as well, there is no reason to put 300 yards of power pro on the reel.

Lure weight to to line and spool setting makes all the differance in the world.
I have found that casting light weight lures can leave the line on the spool too loose on the top. If I use a light lure I usually tie on a heavier one and make a few casts to reset the line on the spool. Crankbaits are the lures I cast for distance.

You have a good idea, yourkiddin...You may already do as we do, we spool all baitcasters with the line comming off the top of the spool while spinning on a pencil or electrical spooler. Spinning reels in a clockwise motion (if your reel spins clockwise) off the side of the spool. Happy fishing. We use Ande only.

Power Pro is one of the "super braids", very thin and comes green, red, yellow, also made in the USA!:D If I was getting many backlashes, I wouldn't use any of the super braids, because being so thin, they are more difficult to work with(untangle) and they are more expensive.

You say your fishing for Stripers. What kind of rod and reel are you using? What are you throwing?

BTW: If they are pulling off 60-80 yards of line you need a better drag. 60-80 feet I might beleive :D

Re: do you go through alot of line

I started using Ardent line butter this year and it has reduced the number of times I've changed out my line. It keeps the line soft and smooth. I change my lines when they have too much memory and deteriorated from usage. They get weaker and don't cast as smooth after awhile. Line butter extends their life quite a bit. Next time you get a bird nest, try this. Engage the reel, put your thumb on the nest firmly, crank the handle 2-3 turns, press the thumb bar then pull on the line. This will free up the jam. If it doesn't work the first time, try again. A bad nest will require you do this a few times but it sure beats trying to pick it out. It does work, trust me.
